BALLE Accelerating Community Capital Webinar Series

Aug 14 2012 - 10:00am - 11:00am
PST

Webinar topic: Local Stock Offering Part 2: Worker Ownership and Direct Public Offerings

Speaker: Chris Michael of Workers Development and Workers Diner

About the topic: Chris Michael and his partners at Workers Development have been working to create Workers Diner, a family-friendly dining establishment serving traditional New York City diner cuisine in the heart of Central Brooklyn. Pending funding through a Direct Public Offering (DPO) launched this spring, Workers Diner will be organized as a worker-controlled business, or worker cooperative, with all voting rights and profits retained by worker-owners.  Of primary importance, Workers Diner’s founders intend on establishing a replicable model for the financing of worker-controlled businesses: with startup costs raised from local communities, profits and proceeds can remain in local communities.  Chris will share the story of Workers Diner through the lens of a worker cooperative using a DPO as its community capital mechanism -- how they set the stage for this mechanism and how it is serving the business and community.

Funding LaunchPad

Some very exciting news! Funding LaunchPad will feature Workers Diner as its first client on their innovative new online crowdfunding platform. By transitioning from our current "home-made" online purchasing mechanism to Funding LaunchPad, Workers Diner will gain all the knowledge and experience of FL's social media and crowdfunding expertise.

The new online platform will simplify the investment process, and allow investors to engage each other about the merits of our offering, as well as, to direct questions to the Workers team. The site will also feature quick links to video and audio content, offering documents, and provide snapshots of our funding success.

We'll be working closely with the FL team over the next two weeks for a July 13 launch date. Stay tuned for more!

For now, NY and CT can continue to invest via workersdiner.coop/invest!

Talk at Fordham Law Clinic

Workers Development was invited by Professor Gowri Krishna to speak with a community economic development legal clinic at Fordham Law School. On Thursday afternoon, we sat down to discuss securities, crowdfunding, and the meaning of community ownership. In particular, we analyzed the case of a community-supported agriculture program in Harlem and the South Bronx that would like to follow a public ownership model. We had a lot of fun!
